GECC3230 Service-Learning Programme (Local) 

2023/24 Term 1

 

Objectives

  • To cultivate a sense of community service in Chung Chi students;
  • To provide students with opportunities to get in touch with different segments of society, broadening their horizons, and strengthening their critical thinking on social issues; and
  • To provide students with opportunities to further develop personal growth and enhance social skills through reflective journals, evaluation meetings, and discussions in seminars.

 

Eligibility

  • Non-Social Work major students who will promote to Year 3 or above in 2023/2024; OR
  • Non-Social Work major senior year entrants students who will promote to Year 2 or above in 2023/2024

Service Group

Students will participate in one of the following service groups of 4 team members.

People with Hearing Disability
  • Service targets are students from P.4 to S.3 with different levels of hearing disability.
  • The group aims to enhance students’ social skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, emotional management, and understanding of the community through activity-based learning programmes.
  • Service will be conducted in Ngau Tau Kok and Mong Kok.
  • Students are required to serve as volunteers in June, so as to engage the service targets and explore their needs.

 

SLCO Community Resources
Ethnic Minorities
  • The group aims to enhance EM children’s interest to learn Chinese through a variety of activities. Students can also explore the needs of youth, women, and families through the service.
  • Service will be conducted in Jordon.
  • Students are required to serve as volunteers in June, so as to engage the service targets and explore their needs.
Ultimate United, Hong Kong

Community Bridging

                     

  • Service targets are residents in Yau Ma Tei district.
  • The group will conduct visits in the community and interview residents. Other than co-organizing activities to the community, students will also design electronic community maps, recording the remarkable highlights and stories, which enrich the community bonding.

Scavengers
  • To know about the recycling system in Hong Kong;
  • To study scavengers’ daily work in the community;
  • To examine and discuss the local poverty issues;
  • To reflect on the value of serving the poverty;
  • To apply knowledge and skills as well as to care for the grassroots community through service experience
Mission to New Arrivals

Cleaners

  • To know about the government outsourced cleaning services;
  • To study cleaners’ daily work in the community;
  • To examine and discuss the difficulties and working conditions that cleaners are facing;
  • To reflect on the value of serving the poverty;
  • To apply knowledge and skills as well as to care for the grassroots community through service experience
Community Farming and Urban-Rural Symbiosis
  • Service targets are inhabitants of Sheung Shui and CUHK
  • The group will gain hands-on experience by collecting community foodwaste, making compost, and cultivating. With the taste of urban-rural symbiosis, students will interview stakeholders in the food supply chain in CUHK, so as to plan and practice for a more sustainable edible campus.
  • Service will be conducted in Sheung Shui and CUHK from early June to late August.
